Highway 395, Eastern Sierras, California: Strong, sometimes alone, graceful and vallant, often what we like to think our nation represents, this massive old oak off Highway 395 in the Owens River Valley seems to embody all that is good about who we are both as a nation and a people. Against all odds, harsh weather and even drought, this amazing tree stands the test of time. I’m hopeful our nation can see its way to doing the same. Having photographed this tree numerous times throughout the year, this image, with its blue sky, golden field and mountain range climbing upwards is filled with metaphors.
