Colorado
I have always enjoyed the mountains. Having grown up in Los Angeles, it was always a treat to get out of the city and climb, hike and ski. But when I made my first trip to the San Juan Mountains of South Western Colorado, I knew I had found my second home. The San Juans and the Rockies themselves are one of America's greatest (and for many) undiscovered treasures. Chief Ouray was right, this is a very spiritual place indeed. Enjoy.

Aspen Path
Rocky Mountians near Aspen, Colorado
To walk into a grove of aspen trees nestled in a canyon is to experience silence, rippled by the sound of a hesitant wind. The golden back light of the sun, against the blackness of the canyon walls sparkles the leaves with all their shimmering color. The path quietly meanders amongst these trees, seemingly reminding me of their deep roots in the earth, ones that connect and go on for miles.

  Fall Willow River
Redstone, Colorado
The Cottonwood-Willow trees seem to cling to the rivers around the Rocky Mountains in Colorado like a glove on a full hand. They wind and weave with the rivers in canyons and valleys, changing from barren tall naked trees in winter, to green tall shading walls in spring, and then multi-colored dreams of light and wind before they again feel the cold of winter.

  Moonglow
Aspen, Colorado
Day for night, a grove of Aspens, nestled against the dark cliffs around Aspen, Colorado. The beauty of golden leaves on green grass was enhanced by the light on the leaves and the darkness of the background. But its the quiet that pervades these canyons as you walk among them. Then the wind drifts through the canyon ruffling the leaves, breaking the silence in a most peaceful way.

  Silent Reflection
Maroon Bells, White River National Forest, Colorado
When it comes to the ideal of the Colorado Rockies, Maroon Bells and the symmetry of their reflection in Maroon Lake at sunrise are hard to match. Establishing my location on a dark, fall morning, and then working to record the image at the ideal time, I was truely surprised to find myself not alone when I began packing up my gear. Over 50 photographers had joined me by the time the light had finished painting the scene for me. In summer, the area is filled with climbers and traffic jams.

  Pleasant Valley
I have always enjoyed the mountains. Having grown up in Los Angeles, it was always a treat to get out of the city and climb, hike and ski. But when I made my first trip to the San Juan Mountains of South Western Colorado, I knew I had found my second home. The San Juans are one of America's greatest (and for many, undiscovered) treasures. Chief Ouray was right, this is a very spiritual place indeed, for the summer morning sky is cool and crisp, the air is clear, a moose calls in the distance, a gentle wind blows only for a moment, and then the sky begins to glow in the west, as a magnificent vision of the grandeur to come makes its presence known.

Last Dollar Road on the Dallas Divide, San Juan Mountins, Colorado

  Four Seasons
Teluride, Colorado
This rare moment of time where the look of winter, spring, summer and fall are all visually present at the same time comes only a few days in late fall. The Sky Line Guest Ranch, where this was taken, works hard to preserve the natual look and feel of this wonderful area.

  Sneffels Gold
San Juan Mountains, Colorado
Mt. Sneffels is the visual anchor of this rare East/West Colorado mountain range. It’s majestic peak at over 14 thousand feet oversee’s a range that’s home to elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, black bear, mountain lion, golden eagles as well as many smaller mammals.

  Nature's Garden
American Basin, Colorado
High in the Rockies, planted by the winds, blossoming in the spring rains and summer sun, a mountain stream in full flow feeds the calm of this, Nature's Garden.

  Winterland
McClure Pass, Colorado
When the pass is clear in winter, this winter wonderland is exposed for what it is, a truely amazing vista.

  Forever Columbine
Imogene Pass, Colorado
Climbing the Rockies presents vistas of magic and wonder, but like the rest of our views of the world, we rarely stop to notice the little things that also have so much beauty. The Colorado Columbine, with its white and blue sky colors, lends a feeling of calm to the vast wonder of the Rockies.
